Day 9

Saturday 4/28

An update on Mommy first- Susan is feeling a bit more like herself every day and her morning got off to a great start with her favorite breakfast, a vanilla latte and bagel with lox from Mamaleh’s Deli. We still feel guilty every time we enjoy a meal out instead of spending time with Izzy but the nurses keep reminding us to take care of ourselves and take advantage of the help before Izzy becomes our full responsibility. We are working on it.
Izzy also had a good morning and enjoyed a milk breakfast, she is tolerating the feedings well and the doctors raised the volume of milk per feeding to the final level where she will stay for a while. In true Bard fashion, she ate every three hours and maxed out her portions to the most the doctors would give her. This is good news after a bit of a scare yesterday. Izzy was looking lethargic and bloated so the doctors were worried she might have extra air in her belly or possibly an infection. An X-ray of her belly showed air pockets in her large intestine which could be a sign of something more serious. Luckily the blood work and cultures came back negative so no infection… just baby gas. Never been more relieved to have gas.

Today we had a few lovely visitors from Connecticut! Lauren, Liz and Travis made the trip for the day to bring Izzy a cute onesie and doughnut holes for the nursing staff. You can tell Liz works in a hospital. Her friends Flamingo and Dog also hung out for the day.

Daddy Kangaroo day. Isabelle has been doing this thing where she holds her fingers in front of her face and grabs anything she can. Sometimes it is the CPAP machine and other times it is Mommy’s necklace. Nurses say it is good that she is active and alert. She also loves to open her eyes and look up at me when I talk. She’s probably just trying to tell me to knock it off so she can sleep.
